              Part A

At six weeks of age, little Nathan,Mal and their sister who is yet to be named, resemble three kittens purring and napping for the majority of the day.

But by the end of the year,Ben Britton,37,expects his current African lion roommates to weigh up to 40 kilograms each and no longer fit on his couch.

As the director of Wild Animal Encounters in Western Sydney,Mr Britton has taken on the role of the lions’ mother from the day they were born, after their natural mother rejected them.

“They’re sleeping around 20-22 hours a day at the moment so they’re not very active, they only have short bursts of energy when they’re fed which is about four times a day,and then they crash about half an hour after that.”

“Yeah—they have already worked out how to get on the lounge. They just take a little run and jump.”

But as their weight grows by one kilogram a week,it won’t be long before the big cats can no longer find a space on the couch.

Bringing the animals out of their enclosures and into new environments, including his home,is a regularly practiced thing at the Wild Animal Encounters park.

“Animals have got so much going on in the wild—food, shelter, predators, prey and so on.When they come into captivity we supply and delete a lot of that. The mental side in captivity is hard to match,so we try to enrich their lives as much as we can which includes investigating new areas,”Mr Britton said.

1.The three lion kittens live .?

A.at the zoo B.in the forest

              C.in Mr Britton’s home D.in the nature

2.Mr Britton takes the responsibility to take care of the lions because .?

A.this is his duty B.he likes them very much

C.he takes them as his pets D.their mother rejected them

3.The underlined word “captivity” in the last paragraph has the similar meaning as in the passage.?

              A.enclosure

              B.wild

              C.environment

              D.the Wild Animal Encounters park

4.The animals living in the wild have the following advantages except .?

              A.doing many things

              B.always getting enough food

              C.their mental side being matched

              D.rich lives

根據第二段中的“...and no longer fit on his couch.”以及倒數第二段中的“Bringing the animals out of their enclosures and into new environments, including his home”可知,三只小獅子生活在布里頓的家里。

根據第三段中的“Mr Britton has taken on the role of the lions’ mother from the day they were born, after their natural mother rejected them”可知,因為三只小獅子的媽媽不愿照料它們,布里頓就承擔起了母親的職責。

劃線詞后的that即指代上文提到的“so much going in the wild—food, shelter, predators, prey and so on”,結合劃線詞所在句子可知,這里是指我們為動物提供了食物、棲息地等,同時限制了它們的活動,說明它們是被圈養起來了。

              B

The freezing Northeast hasn’t been a terribly fun place to spend time this winter,so when the chance came for a weekend to Sarasota,Florida,my bags were packed before you could say “sunshine”.I left for the land of warmth and vitamin C(維生素C),thinking of beaches and orange trees. When we touched down to blue skies and warm air,I sent up a small prayer of gratefulness.Swimming pools, wine tasting, and pink sunsets(at normal evening hours, not 4 in the afternoon)filled the weekend, but the best part—particularly to my taste, dulled by months of cold-weather root vegetables—was a 7 am adventure to the Sarasota farmers’ market that proved to be more than worth the early wake-up call.

The market, which was founded in 1979,sets up its tents every Saturday from 7 am to 1 pm,rain or shine, along North Lemon and State streets.Baskets of perfect red strawberries;the red-painted sides of the Java Dawg coffee truck;and most of all,the tomatoes:amazing, large, soft and round red tomatoes.

Disappointed by many a broken,vine-ripened(蔓上成熟的)promise,I’ve refused to buy winter tomatoes for years. No matter how attractive they look in the store, once I get them home they’re unfailingly dry, hard, and tasteless. But I homed in,with uncertainty,on one particular table at the Brown’s Grove Farm’s stand, full of fresh and soft tomatoes the size of my fist. These were the real deal—and at that moment,I realized that the best part of Sarasota in winter was going to be eating things that back home in New York I wouldn’t be experiencing again for months.

Delighted as I was by the tomatoes in sight,my happiness deepened when I learned that Brown’s Grove Farm is one of the suppliers for Jack Dusty,a newly opened restaurant at the Sarasota Ritz Carlton, where—luckily for me—I was planning to have dinner that very night.Without even seeing the menu,I knew I’d be ordering every tomato on it.

              A.Go to a farm. B.Check into a hotel.

              C.Eat in a restaurant. D.Buy fresh vegetables.

根據第一段中的“The freezing Northeast hasn’t been a terribly fun place to spend time this winter”以及第三段中的“back home in New York...”

根據第一段結尾“a 7 am adventure to the Sarasota farmers’ market that proved to be more than worth the early wake-up call”可以知道,到當地的農貿市場去買菜,讓作者覺得早起是很值得的。

根據第三段中的“No matter how attractive they look in the store...”

根據最后一段中“a newly opened restaurant at the Sarasota Ritz Carlton, where—luckily for me—I was planning to have dinner that very night”可以知道,那天晚上,作者要到一家新開張的飯店吃飯。

Jane was walking round the department store. She remembered how difficult 1. was to choose a suitable Christmas present for her father. She wished that he was as easy 2.(please) as her mother, who was always 3.(delight) with perfume.?

Besides, shopping at this time of the year was not 4. pleasant experience:people stepped on your feet or 5.(push) you with their elbows (肘部),6.(hurry) ahead to get to a bargain.?

Jane paused in front of a counter 7. some attractive ties were on display.“They are real silk,” the assistant tried to attract her.“Worth double the price.” But Jane knew from past experience that her 8.(choose) of ties hardly ever pleased her father.?

Jane stopped where a small crowd of men had gathered. She found some good quality pipes 9. sale. She did not hesitate for long.Although her father smoked a pipe only once in a while, she knew that this was a present which was bound to please him.?

When Jane got home, with her small but well-chosen present in her bag,her parents were already at table having supper. Her mother was excited.“Your father has at last decided to stop smoking,” Jane 10.(inform).?

1.it。it在賓語從句中作形式主語,真正的主語是to choose a suitable Christmas present for her father。

              2.to please。

              3.delighted。be delighted with為固定搭配,意為“對……感到高興”。

              5.pushed。由上文“people stepped on your feet”可知,此處需用一般過去時。

              6.hurrying。

              7.where。

              8.choice。

              9.on。

              10.was informed。

One of the easiest things in the world is to become a fault-finder.However,life can be 1 when you are not busy finding fault with it.?

Several years ago I 2 a letter from seventeen-year-old Kerry, who described herself as a world-class fault-finder,almost always 3 by things.People were always doing things that annoyed her,and 4 was ever good enough. She was highly self-critical and also found fault with her friends. She became a really 5 person.?

Unfortunately,it took a horrible accident to change her 6 .Her best friend was seriously hurt in a car crash. What made it almost 7 to deal with was that the day before the 8 ,Kerry had visited her friend and had spent the whole time criticizing her 9 of boyfriends, the way she was living, the way she related to her mother, and various other things she felt she needed to 10 .It wasn’t until her friend was badly hurt that Kerry became 11 her habit of finding fault.Very quickly, she learned to appreciate life rather than to 12 everything so harshly(刻薄).She was able to transfer her new wisdom to other parts of her 13 as well.?

Perhaps most of us aren’t as extreme at fault-finding, 14 when we’re honest,we can be sharply 15 of the world.I’m not suggesting you 16 problems,or that you pretend things are 17 than they are,but simply that you learn to allow things to be as they are— 18 most of the time, and especially when it’s not a really big 19 .?

Train yourself to “bite your tongue”,and with a little 20 ,you’ll get really good at letting things go.And when you do,you’ll get back your enthusiasm and love for life.?
