(2024·郴州高三期末教學質量檢測)I was in my third year of teaching writing at Ralph High School in New York, when one of my students,15-year-old Mikey, gave me a note from his mother. It explained his absence from class the day before:
“Dear Mr.McCort,Mikey’s grandmother, who is eighty years of age, fell down the stairs from too much coffee and I kept Mikey at home to take care of her and his baby sister so I could go to my job. Please excuse Mikey and he’ll do his best in the future.P.S.:His grandmother is OK.”
I had seen Mikey writing the note at his desk.I said nothing. Most parental-excuse notes I received were penned by my students. The writers of those notes didn’t realize that honest excuse notes were usually dull,“Peter was late because the alarm clock didn’t go off.”
The students always said it was hard putting 200 words together on any subject, but when they produced excuse notes, they were excellent. So I decided to give the first class to study the art of the excuse note.
“Today I’d like you to write ‘An Excuse Note from Adam to God’or‘An Excuse Note from Eve to God’.” Heads went down.Pens raced across paper. They had to be asked to go to lunch by their friends.
The next day everyone had excuse notes.Heated discussions followed. But suddenly I saw the headmaster at the door.He entered the classroom and walked up and down, looking at papers, and then said.“I’d like you to see me in my office.” My heart sank.

(2024·長沙高三模擬)Schools are taking exam anxiety more seriously now because tests have become very important in determining their performance under the federal No Child Left Behind law.Research suggests that students do better when they’re relaxed and in a good mood.
Craft was one of about 800 10th-graders around the country who participated last year in the study by the California-based Institute of HeartMath. It found that 55% of 10th-graders often had high levels of test anxiety and their scores were lower than those of students who used the company’s techniques to improve relaxation and mood.
This year states must start testing children on math and reading in Grade 3 through 8 under the federal No Child Left Behind Act,which also requires that students take a science test at least once in elementary, middle and high school by 2024—2024.
Bowers is director of counseling for Tucson Unified School District, where some schools use a program called Brain Gym.The program teaches children to take deep breathing exercises to relax and focus on good memories using a series of movements also designed to improve blood flow to the brain.
The idea of programs like HeartMath and Brain Gym is to get participants’minds working efficiently.“It has worked well at East Side Charter School in Willington,Delaware.Once they started using HeartMath, many children at the K-7 school have been able to reduce exam solicitude,as a result, math and reading score improved.”said Bowers.
“They are taught to be in a pleasant place...to breathe deeply and slowly. And,close their eyes and imagine something they love like going with their grandfather to the ice cream store.”Payyon says.

(2024·長沙實驗中學高三月考) Africans see many advantages by uniting the continent into a single nation,or by uniting several small nations of a particular region into a nation. In unity there is strength.Africans often point to the United States, formed by the original 13 states,as an example of this principle.Africa now is divided into many weak nations.United, they would be much stronger.Africans could then more easily deal with foreign efforts to control them. Also it would be easier to plan and carry out big projects like the building of highways and dams.
The considerations for African unity go beyond the practical advantages it brings. As we have seen, one factor is that the feeling of belonging to a particular nation is not strong among Africans. If,for example, you were to ask a man from Paris“What are you?”,he would certainly answer “A Frenchman”.Ask the same question of a man from Ibadan in Nigeria and he might give one of three answers,or all three, depending on his education and outlook. He might say,“A Yoruba”(his people),or “A Nigerian”, or just simply “An African”.
Another factor that enters into the desire for unity is that African leaders throughout the continent feel that they all have many things in common. They all lived through the experience of colonial rule. Many of them went to school and university with men who now lead other African countries. They all feel very angry about the way in which they were treated in the past.Compared with these strong bonds (結合),which overshadow the borders of nations, the idea of building separate nations does not have so much meaning. Some leaders say they are ready,in fact,to give up their separate nations.
Many nations have written into their constitutions(憲法),and they may give up their powers to a Pan-African government that will come into being.
