Most children now chat daily either online or through their mobile phones. They are connecting to a huge number of other children all over the world. Some are shy “in real life” but are confident to communicate with others online;others find support from people of their own age on relationship issues,or problems at home.

Sometimes the online world, just like the real world, can introduce problems, such as arguments.Going online is great fun,but there are also a few people who use the Internet for offensive(冒犯性的)or illegal aims.Children must be made aware of both the good things and the dangers.

To keep children safe your management must cover the family computer.Just as you decide which TV programs are suitable, you need to do the same for the websites and chatrooms your children visit.Remind your children that online friends are still strangers.Reminding them of the risks will keep them alert(警惕).

Computer studies are part of schoolwork now,so it’s likely that your children may know more than you do.We get left behind when it comes to the latest gadgets and the interactive areas of websites, like chatrooms and message boards, which are especially strange. The language of chat is strange to many parents, too.Chatters love to use abbreviations(縮寫)such as:atb—all the best, bbfn—bye bye for now,cul8er—see you later,gr8—great,Idk—I don’t know, imbl—it must be love, kit—keep in touch, paw—parents are watching, lol—laugh out loud, xlnt—excellent!

If the hackings(黑客行為)taught us anything in 2024,it’s actually nothing.

Password management firm SplashData released its list of the worst passwords of the year and it’s just as terrible as you’d think. The most common leaked password in 2024 was “123456” followed by “password”—both topped the list the year before, too.

While numbers were as popular as ever as passwords, sports terms like “baseball” and “football” were used more often.Birthday years were common too(especially 1989,1990,1991 and 1992)and names like “Michael”,“Jennifer” and “Hunter” are also among the top 100 worst passwords of 2024.

Here’s a look at the top 10 worst passwords of the year:

              1.123456 (Unchanged from 2024)

              2.password (Unchanged)

              3.12345 (Up 17)

              4.12345678 (Down 1)

              5.qwerty (Down 1)

              6.234567890 (Unchanged)

              7.baseball (New)

              8.dragon (New)

              9.football (New)

              10.monkey (New)

This year’s worst passwords are painfully weak, but what were once considered clever password strategies—using symbols, capitalizations, the number 3 in place of the letter “e”—are old tricks.

It’s now recommended to pick a different password for each account you use—you wouldn’t use the same key in all of your locks, and the same goes for passwords.

Companies like Facebook,Twitter and Apple are now trying to make hacking more difficult on their services by offering two-factor authentication(認證),which is basically like double locking your door at night. Each time you want to log into (登錄) that account, the company will send a code to your phone—it changes after each login attempt,so hackers would have to be in physical possession of your smartphone to know the code.

4.What can we learn from the text?

Recently, our class has had a discussion about the effects of the Internet on high school students, and the results are as follows.

Some of us believe that the Internet has very bad effects on high school students, which makes students away from the reality. For one thing, some students spend too much time surfing the Internet, which affects their studies as well as their health. For another, there is a lot of junk information online, some of which is very harmful to high school students. If not used wisely, the Internet can lead to many problems.

However, others are very optimistic about the effects of the Internet on us.First of all,the Internet makes students’ life colorful because it’s easier for them to read news, make friends and even learn English online! What’s more, they can keep up with the latest information and learn what’s going on at home and abroad. Therefore, they think the Internet is really important.
