表示害怕的形容詞例析
afraid，scared，frightened，fearful，worried 等是指人從緊張、焦慮到感到害怕、恐懼的心理狀態；而worrying，scary，frightening則是指外部的情況引起了人的驚慌、害怕或恐懼。
1.afraid多指對某人或某物的一貫懼怕，有時也指一般的懼怕心理；如：
⑴ I am afraid of snakes. 我怕蛇。
⑵ Many children are afraid of thunder and lightning. 許多孩子都怕打雷和閃電。
注意：afraid to do sth. 與be afraid of doing sth.的用法是有區別的。be afraid to do sth.是表示害怕、不敢去執行to do 的行為；be afraid of doing sth.是怕doing sth.的行為引起的可能的后果。如：
⑶ A house is on fire，and you are trapped. Someone shouted.
－ Jump！跳下去！
I'm afraid to jump. 我不敢跳。（意思是缺乏跳下去的勇氣）
－ Why？為什么？
－ I'm afraid of breaking my ankle！我怕摔斷了踝骨。（意思是有可能造成踝骨摔斷的后果）
2.scared 和frightened通常指害怕身體受到傷害的恐懼心理，也可指不明顯來歷不明的恐懼。frightened稍顯文雅，并強調驚嚇的突然性。如：
⑷ The boys are frightened to move. 孩子們嚇得不敢動彈。
scared 常指膽小的人或動物受到突然刺激所產生的劇烈恐懼，如：
⑸ When the lights went out，the girl got scared.
燈光熄滅后，那女孩非常害怕。
3.fearful指充滿恐懼，但通常只含有預料危險，失敗或煩惱將至的意思。fearful所表示的擔心或恐懼來自內心，與外部情況無關。如：
⑹ She was fearful when she saw the elephant approaching her.
看見大象向她走來，她很害怕。
⑺ They are fearful of losing their jobs.
他們擔心會失業。
4.worried與fearful一樣，表示擔心或恐懼來自內心。如：
⑻ I am a bit worried that something might go wrong.
我有點擔心要出什么事了。
5. worrying含義是使人煩惱的；憂慮重重的，注意與worried的區別。如：
⑼ Here health is a worrying situation. 她的健康狀況令人擔憂。
比較：She looks very tire d and worried.她看起來很疲倦很焦慮。
6.scary含義是引起驚慌的；嚇人的。注意與scared 的區別。scaring作為形容詞是不存在的；scary 也可指人膽小的；易受驚的。如：
⑽ The black tower is a scary place. 那黑塔是嚇人的地方。
⑾ Don't be so scared；we are quite safe .
不要擔驚受怕，我們很安全。
7.frightening 含義是嚇人的。如：
⑿ The horror movie was very frightening.
這部恐怖電影很嚇人的。
上述形容詞只有afraid不能做前置定語，其余都可以做前置定語。
