除了學(xué)習(xí)成績和外語水平以外，推薦信是國外學(xué)校了解學(xué)生的重要依據(jù)之一，在研究生課程中尤其如此。國外高等院校不僅注意申請人的考試成績，也很注意申請人在學(xué)習(xí)和專業(yè)工作中反映出來的多方面的特點，這在很大程度上要依賴于推薦信。

推薦信要盡量避免使用那些對人人都適用的評語，而應(yīng)力求反映一個學(xué)生的特點。例如，在專業(yè)領(lǐng)域中遇到難題時的意志和動力、創(chuàng)新精神和求知欲、對新事物的反應(yīng)能力、對陌生事物或環(huán)境的適應(yīng)能力、人際溝通與處理人際關(guān)系的能力、領(lǐng)導(dǎo)才能、事業(yè)心與責(zé)任感、課堂講授還或科研工作中表現(xiàn)出來的特長或弱點，等等。

*學(xué)生當然只可能具備其中某一些優(yōu)點。

*應(yīng)舉例說明，如，曾經(jīng)獲得的獎勵、發(fā)表過的論文、參加過的重要學(xué)術(shù)會議，以及在學(xué)生組織或教學(xué)組織中的任職，等等。

在推薦信中要注意的其它事項是：

**推薦人應(yīng)該對學(xué)生的學(xué)習(xí)或?qū)I(yè)工作情況比較熟悉；

**實事求是，既要不夸張其辭，也不要低估學(xué)生的能力；

**不要用套話，但介紹學(xué)生的情況要具體、詳細，不要寫得過于簡單；

**學(xué)生在教學(xué)活動以外的其它表現(xiàn)和成就，可以作簡略的介紹，這也可以從一個側(cè)面反映學(xué)生的特點。

您永遠不可能有第二次機會給人留下第一印象。您的申請材料就是院校對您產(chǎn)生的“第一印象”，它將提供證明您值得錄取的機會，并表明您已經(jīng)具備了足夠的學(xué)識基礎(chǔ)以攻讀所申請修讀的課程。
