Xia, born Yang Meng in 1933 in Shanghai, China, moved with her family to Hong Kong in 1947. In 1949, she was chosen to play the leading role in the English language production of Saint Joan.
夏夢1933年出生于中國上海，1947年隨家人遷居香港。1949年，夏夢出演英語話劇《圣女貞德》，并擔任主角。
Xia Meng joined The Great Wall Studio in 1951 and was given her first role as the title character in Pingqian Li's Jin hun ji (1951) (A Night-Time Wife), rocketed to stardom in her debut. The comedy was a hit later, stands out as a genuine classic of Hong Kong cinema. Many other hits followed. There was the tragic of Ri cu (1956) (Sunrise), and, at her best, as the virtuous widow in Xin gua (1956) (A Widow's Tears) (both 1956), and perhaps most remarkably, her gender-bending turn as a man masquerading as a woman in the all-female opera comedy Wong lao hu qiang qin (1960) (The Bride Hunter).
1951年，她加入長城影業(yè)公司，在李倩萍執(zhí)導的《禁婚記》(英文名：A Night-Time Wife)中首次出演，這是她的熒幕處女作。該劇播出后獲得了極大的成功，成為香港電影永恒的經典。其它影片紛紛效仿。1956夏夢出演悲劇片《日出》(英文名：Sunrise)，代表作《新寡》(1956)(英文名：A Widow's Tears)，最經典,讓人印象深刻的是1960年她在全部由女班出演的戲曲電影《王老虎搶親》(英文名: The Bride Hunter)中飾演男性角色，繼而男扮女裝搶親的故事。
注：夏夢曾與越劇電影《紅樓夢》的導演岑范有一段戀愛，但最終未能攜手走進婚姻殿堂，岑范也終身不娶。
